With the Affordable Care Act, insurance plans are required to extend coverage to adult dependents through age 26. If you are under 26 years old, you may be able to get insured under a parent’s plan.

You can join, remain, or return to a parent’s plan even if you are married, not living with your parents, attending school, financially independent or eligible to enroll in an employer plan.

Adult children may be enrolled during a plan’s Open Enrollment period or during other special enrollment opportunities. When you apply for a new plan in the Marketplace, you can usually sign up adult dependents through age 26 on the same application.
